A weir is a low overflow structure built across a river, channel, or sump. It controls water level, measures flow, and protects downstream equipment. In weir construction, the details are not optional. Crest height, approach velocity, and downstream energy dissipation decide whether the structure works or slowly beats itself apart.
Look, I get the temptation to call something temporary. A 20 cm error in crest height can be fine during a dry season—or it can flood the upstream side during the next drawdown. One warning: don't choose a door with open-cell foam just because it's cheap. It waterlogs. A well-made replacement with closed-cell foam is the better buy.
What is a bucket bag, and when should I replace it?
A bucket bag—also called a debris bag or suction strainer bag depending on the plant—is the removable liner that catches solids before they reach the pump impeller. It sounds low-tech, but in slurry or drainage service it is the first defense against expensive wear.
Check it at every scheduled stop. If you see holes, stretched mesh, or a collapsed outlet, replace it. A torn bucket bag sends stones straight into the impeller, which is a repair bill ten times the bag price. I still kick myself for the time I skipped a pre-outage check because the pump had been running fine. That was the one time a rock got through a cracked bag. Two days of downtime later, the math was obvious.
When you order, give the exact pump model and current bag dimensions. Saying one that fits means different things to different people. That's the kind of communication failure that creates a rush order in the first place.
What are the signs my condensate pump is failing?
A condensate pump moves the water that condenses out of an evaporator coil or steam system to a drain. It's unglamorous. You ignore it until it floods the plant room. The warning signs show up early:

- The float switch cycles more often than it did last month.
- The pump runs but the water level in the tank stays high.
- Rust-colored water leaks underneath the tank.
- The overload protector trips twice in one week.
If you wait until the motor smells burnt, you are not just replacing the pump. You're also cleaning up backed-up condensate. When you do replace it, evaluate pumping head and flow, not just the brand. A pump that's too small will short-cycle and burn out again. In 2024, a client paid $280 extra for a 24-hour replacement instead of risking a $24,000 production outage. That math is not hard.
Who should inspect a crane?
The short answer: a qualified person. Not the person who happens to be nearest to the crane.
In the United States, mobile cranes used in construction fall under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1412. That standard requires a competent person to inspect the crane before initial use, after assembly, and periodically. Annual inspections require a qualified person—someone with a recognized degree, certificate, or professional standing plus demonstrated experience. Overhead cranes in general industry have similar requirements in 29 CFR 1910.179.
A good inspector doesn't just walk around the machine. They check load charts, wire rope, brakes, limit switches, and the unglamorous bolts that hold the boom together. If you're working near a river or weir construction, also verify the crane's footing. A crane on saturated ground is a crane waiting to tip.
What does weir construction have to do with pumps?
This is the question nobody asks until after the concrete is in the water. A new weir upstream of a pump intake changes flow depth, sediment movement, and air entrainment. It can also create a calm zone that lets debris settle right where the pump wants to take water.
In pump terminology, a weir is often a flow-control edge inside a tank or sump. In river engineering, it is the structure across the channel. When someone says weir construction, clarify which meaning they're using—or rather, ask them to send a drawing. The words are the same; the engineering is not.
So before you pour, review the pump's NPSH and intake conditions with the design team. It's easier to redraw the weir than to add a booster pump later.
How fast can I get a replacement part without cutting corners?
Most rush orders are really a test of system trust. In my role, I've handled 200+ rush orders over a decade. At least, that's been my experience with deadline-critical industrial parts. The ones that work all have a 48-hour buffer. If a vendor says next day, add a day. If they say we're not sure, start looking elsewhere.
