If you work in mining, water management, or any plant that moves slurry, you've probably typed the word 'weir' into a search bar at some point. It seems like the obvious way to find parts for a Weir Minerals sump pump. But a search for 'weir' can just as easily return Peter Weir Picnic at Hanging Rock, a concrete weir wall contractor, a bucket hat, and a sponsored guide titled 'how to become forklift certified.' I saw all of those in the same search feed, and one of those misinterpretations cost me $4,200.
I've been handling aftermarket parts orders for nine years. I've personally made—and documented—eleven significant mistakes, totaling roughly $38,000 in wasted budget. Now I maintain our team's pre-order checklist to stop everyone else from repeating them.
The mistake in that search feed wasn't the film, the hat, or the forklift course. The mistake was thinking that the first plausible-looking industrial result was the right part. That's the surface problem: we treat a keyword search like a part number search.
The deeper cause: 'Weir' is a name, not a specification

And a 'how to become forklift certified' article might be useful to the warehouse team, but it tells you nothing about wear plates or impellers. If you order based on a search result, you're gambling.
Why does this matter? Because in industrial purchasing, the label on the part is not the part. A real part spec includes the model number, serial number, material code, dimensions, and tolerance. I've seen listings that say 'fits Weir pumps' and then show a pair of bolt holes that don't line up with anything. How ambiguity gets expensive

- What is the serial number or product code?
- Is the part OEM or aftermarket? If aftermarket, do we have a material test report and a fit guarantee?
If we can't verify those things, we call the Weir Parts Center with the serial number. We don't buy from a screenshot. We also add cost for risk to every quote: purchase price plus expected freight plus lead-time risk plus the probability of rework. Once we started doing that, the 'cheap' options stopped looking cheap.
