I'm the person who approves purchase orders before they become invoices. The 'they're all made in the same factory' belief is a leftover from an era when a skimmer was a simple steel box and the weir door was basically a flap. People think emergency parts are expensive because the vendor knows you are stuck. The reality is that emergency work makes planned work wait. The expensive part of a failed door is not the door; it's the unplanned truck run, the telehandler with bucket bag, and the crew working overtime because the schedule broke.
What I look for now
I still buy aftermarket parts. That is not the lesson. The lesson is to stop classifying parts only by price. A replacement skimmer weir door is a control component, not a cosmetic flap. Now I ask for a buoyancy spec, material data, and a performance guarantee. If a supplier cannot show that, I don't care how low the price is.
When a cheap part fails in front of a customer, the customer doesn't see the $223 we saved. They see a service company that had to come back and fix its own work. That impression costs more than any rush order. The math hurt, but the lesson stuck.
